The great Carmen Amaya popularized flamenco shows in the US in the 1940s, but the incredible art form has been around for two centuries. Known for the deeply emotional music often accompanied by hand clapping, canstanets and certainly, graceful dances that feature fast heel tapping, it is crossing the Atlantic and coming to Cleveland straight from the warm region of Andalusia. With “We Call It Flamenco”, you can discover this passionate form of artistic creation without having to leave the city.
Featuring world-class flamenco dancers and musicians, the one-hour show promises to be a mesmerizing display of talent. There is limited availability so grab your tickets now before they sell out!
What is “We Call It Flamenco”?
“We Call It Flamenco” is an ode to the art form, as well as the Andalusian culture and identity. The show presents two bailaores (dancers), a guitar player and a cantaor (singer) that most definitely have the Andalusian duende. It is that mysterious talent and capacity flamenco performers possess to convey emotions and connect deeper with audiences. As the dancers wear mantones (Andalusian embroidered shawls) and long flamenca dresses, you can’t help but feel entranced by their graceful arm movements and precise feet stamping.
Flamenco, its palos and the show
By bringing you six palos (traditional types of flamenco), each expressing distinct feelings and with its own dance style, the show aims to reintroduce you to some of flamenco’s most recognizable styles. These include the mother style, aka the fandango, as well as the dynamic cantiñas of Cádiz and the joyous bulería and tango styles.
No need to travel to the south of Spain this season, for “We Call It Flamenco” has got you covered. You can have a slice of Spain right here in Cleveland.
This fall, you can choose between two shows at 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the start of the show. Tickets are sold at different rates, depending on the proximity to the stage, starting at $26.85.
